Lyrics of the Day: Deer Tick
![]()
“Raindrops like bullets
On my fragile skin
And insecurities I’ve had
Are creeping within
Now I’m 20 miles outside
Of the place that you live
And I need one more chance
Now that time’s running thin”
- Deer Tick, “Twenty Miles”
Deer Tick, an indie rock band hailing from the small state of Rhode Island, channels the raucous, dirty blues of old in their albums and especially in their live performances. Lead singer and lyricist John McCauley, whose acerbic howl ranges from feral and untamed to sorrowful and heartfelt, takes the listener on a journey through back alleys, old bars and unrequited love. “Twenty Miles,” taken from The Black Dirt Sessions LP released in 2010, tells of a man determined to win back the love of his life at whatever cost. Like most all of Deer Tick’s songs, the machismo of “Twenty Miles” is laced with genuine insecurity and a bare honesty that listeners of the band have grown to love and expect from their music.
