Lyrics of the Day: Feist

“Cicadas and gulls
A scrape on the hull
The land and the sea
Are distant from me
I’m in the sky, sky, sky
I’m in the sky
Thoughts are like pearls
When flags are unfurled”
- Feist, “Cicadas and Gulls”
“Cicadas and Gulls,” one of the standouts from Feist’s 2011 record Metals, is a joyous, ethereal and peaceful track from the Canadian singer-songwriter. Her fourth album may in fact be her most consistent release to date, which is quite an accomplishment when one considers her past records. While her other compositions may have focused more on catchiness and appeal, the latest output from Feist sees the artist place a greater emphasis on depth and subtlety. It may not possess the pop appeal of The Reminder, but the layered emotion and sonic texture of Metals make it the most lasting and rewarding listening experience in the impressive catalog of Leslie Feist. Enjoy “Cicadas and Gulls,” which appears to be from the point of view of one who has passed away, and is looking down on his or her friends from up above.
