Lyrics of the Day: The Radio Dept.

“When I look at you, I reach for a piano wire
Fighting to keep it together, but it’s pointless
One look at you and heaven’s on fire,
Heaven’s on fire
It seems like everyone is on your side
We’re outnumbered by those who take no pride
In constantly moving against the tide
Charlatans just out of reach and out of time”
- The Radio Dept., “Heaven’s on Fire”
Though this Swedish band’s sound may be described as shoegaze pop and dream-like in nature, the lyrics to “Heaven’s on Fire” seethe with righteous indignation and anger. Taken from The Radio Dept.’s latest record, Clinging to a Scheme, this track has quickly become a favorite among fans of the band. Influenced by such acts as Joy Division and singer-songwriter Nick Drake, one can garner that mood and lyricism are of vital importance to Johan Duncanson, Martin Larsson and Daniel Tjäder. For those with a penchant for music heavy on melody, atmosphere and emotional lyricism, it would be wise to further explore The Radio Dept.’s body of work.
